Festa Luce Wakayama: How light transforms a destination
Festa Luce has developed into one of Japan's most impressive winter events and demonstrates how light production can reposition an entire region.
Festa Luce Wakayama: How light transforms a destination
Wakayama was long known primarily for its southern onsen regions. However, with Festa Luce, the northern part of the prefecture has also established itself as a winter destination. The light park, realized with MK Illumination Japan, convincingly combines atmosphere, experience design, and local integration.
The idea behind the project
The starting point was the unique setting of Porto Europe in Wakayama Marina City. The facility, with European-inspired architecture, is often used as a film set and offers an unusual atmosphere for Japan.
The vision: a winter event reminiscent of European Christmas markets, without simply copying them. Instead, a place that evokes emotions and caters to different audiences—from families to couples.
Design with a feel for the place
The design consistently follows the aim of blending into the surroundings. The light motifs from MK Illumination incorporate the architecture and create a cohesive overall image.
Central focal points, such as around the fountain at the heart of the facility, provide strong visual moments. At the same time, the experience is deliberately designed to be interactive: children move through light installations, dance in illuminated domes, or trigger color changes with their steps.
New elements, such as large luminous balloons, expand the offerings and make the park particularly attractive to families.

A new chapter every year
The motto "A Place to Experience a True Christmas" remains, but is reinterpreted annually. Changing themes provide variety and give visitors a reason to return.
From "Symphony" to "Swiss Festival" to "Light Parade!!" or "Colorful"—each season brings its own visual and emotional signature.
More than just light
A key component of Festa Luce is the staged programs. Particularly popular are the lantern events: hundreds of visitors let their lanterns rise simultaneously into the sky—accompanied by music and drone performances.
Drone shows have also become a fixed part of the program and significantly increase visitor numbers on event days.
Noticeable effects for the region
Festa Luce has measurable impacts on Wakayama. The rising visitor numbers strengthen the hospitality industry and local economy, ensuring better distribution of tourism within the region.
At the same time, the local population is actively involved. School activities and discounted tickets provide access for children and families. Markets with Christmas goods and light decorations appeal to a broad audience.
Another highlight is the lighting of a roughly two-kilometer-long street near Wakayama Station. With over 1.3 million LEDs, an impressive light axis is created here, which becomes a meeting point for the whole city during the annual lighting moment and parade.
Creating an emotional connection
Even outside the installations, Festa Luce relies on recognition. Annually changing collector's items, such as specially designed mugs, have long become part of the tradition for many visitors.
Light as a strategic tool
Festa Luce shows how light can extend far beyond decoration. By combining design, storytelling, and local involvement, a place with its own identity is created.
For MK Illumination, the project exemplifies an approach in which light not only beautifies spaces but turns them into genuine experiential locations.
