Light as an experience: The Wandelhalle Hamburg newly staged
In the middle of Hamburg's main station, a place emerges that allows everyday life to pause for a moment. Light becomes a design element for a new spatial experience.
The Wandelhalle in Hamburg's main station is far more than just a passageway.
It connects a traffic hub with a shopping world – a space used daily by thousands of people. This is where a special challenge arises:
How do you create attention and atmosphere in an environment characterized by movement?
The answer lies in a precisely thought-out light staging.
Together with the partner Pep Up, MK Illumination implemented a concept that transforms the Wandelhalle into an emotional experience world during the Christmas season. Instead of classic decoration, the project focuses on staging, dynamics, and spatial effect.
At the center is an 11-meter-high Giant Tree. Made from i-String Lite and equipped with around 18,000 light points, it serves as the visual anchor of the entire installation. Its presence is deliberately chosen: striking enough to have an impact in the space, yet harmonized with the historical architecture.
However, the staging does not remain static.
Every 20 minutes, the space becomes part of a light and sound show, synchronized to "Let It Snow" by Chris Rea. The music connects the various levels of the hall and guides attention purposefully through the space. In between, a selection of international artists – including Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and Kelly Clarkson – provide a continuous atmospheric soundscape, accompanied by gentle light animations.
It is precisely this interplay that makes the difference. The staging remains lively without being intrusive. It accompanies the course of the day – from early morning until late in the evening – and adapts to the different visitor flows.

The design of the space itself is also an integral part of the concept.
Dual String Lite in warm white and cold white stretches over two levels and visually connects paths, facades, and lounge areas. This is complemented by RGB spotlights in the roof area, which set additional color accents and subtly change the architecture.
Particularly exciting is the interplay between historical building fabric and modern lighting technology. The Wandelhalle is not overlaid but deliberately staged. Lines are emphasized, structures highlighted, and the space receives a new, contemporary level.
For cities and operators, this project clearly shows: Light can do far more than decorate. It creates orientation, atmosphere, and identity – especially in high-frequency spaces.
In Hamburg's Wandelhalle, a place is created that goes beyond its function. A space that is not just traversed, but consciously experienced.
